New Boat for 2014

thWhen I got my current boat 3 years ago, it was with the plan to use it as an experiment. Would I use it regularly, would the family enjoy using the boat, would we take it with us on vacation, essentially, would we be a “boat family”. It would be easy to just get a boat, but with only so much time and money, it made sense to be sure that a boat would be a good family investment. We’ve known for a while that a cottage was not in our near future, but the idea a boat gave some options, whether it be when we went camping, or visiting other people on a lake, or traveling anywhere a boat launch would be nearby.

ImageThis year I attended the Toronto Boat Show with the express purpose of getting up close with my two shortlisted brands. I was looking at a Lund, or a Princecraft. They both have great reputations, both come highly recommended, and I see top fisherman using both. The only questions for me were whether I could live with a bit higher price for the Canadian made Princecraft, or should I go with the Lund. What ultimately made the decision for me was the efforts of the sales staff. One person gave me a quote and said he’d be happy to order me a boat. The other team (there were several people involved) made it clear they wanted my business, and were willing to time and effort into researching my needs, and making recommendations that would lead to greater enjoyment of the boat. After some traditional haggling I put down the deposit on my new Princecraft Resorter DLX BT, which should arrive in time for the Walleye and Pike Opener. I ordered it with a 40hp Mercury 4 Stroke, a couple of fish finders, a Minn Kota trolling motor and the really fun, made sure I’d have Ipilot!

Image

The Ipilot should be an exciting addition that will help me fish specific areas, in tough conditions, especially when I’m fishing by myself and have to land a fish or swap out some gear. The ability to be held with an electronic anchor within 5 feat of my marked spot should come in pretty handy. I’m pretty excited to get the new rig and put it on the water. I’ll be getting a tube to pull the kids behind it when the water is warmer, so we should have lots of family fun. It’s still light enough to pull behind our current vehicle, and with the 4 stroke, I expect my fuel use to remain pretty consistent. I’ll shoot a video for you once I pick it up!

2014 Toronto Sportsman Show

ImageThis weekend I made my annual journey to the Toronto Sportsman Show, held at the Direct Energy Centre. I’ve been going for the last several years, and it’s a nice break in the middle of winter, allowing me to get excited about open water fishing. I went with my brother and a buddy, and we all go something out of it. I remember the first time I went, I thought it would be just a huge hall filled with great deals on everything outdoors, but I realized that this isn’t the case. I think with so many huge outdoor stores, such as SAIL and Bass Pro, that really, there are already permanent outdoor shows in those locations, who have regular sales throughout the year. No, the Sportsman Show for me is a chance to see all of the major fishing brands bring out their new product lines for the coming year, and provide a chance for you to speak to their pro-staff. For me, it’s this access to knowledge that keeps me coming back.

ImageI was pleased to speak to several Rapala Pro Staff, one about the Scatter Rap series, as well as the new Storm Arashi baits, and to touch on the Storm Flat Sticks. I am a big believer in the Scatter Raps, but I think a few Arashis’ and Flatsticks my be in order. I spoke with another Rapala Rep regarding rod holders, and he was able to put in me in touch with a company called Scotty’s that sell the perfect solution for me, and they have a dealer right near me called Natural Sports. Another thing I enjoyed was watching a few of the education sessions hosted by Fish TV. The program was moderated by Fish TV host Ron James, and I saw a good session on working the whole water column by Italo Labignan, who is the host of Canadian Sport Fishing.

ImageWe also saw a session I enjoyed, though was cut short to my disappointment, by Jeremie Brooks, who is a member of the Rapala Pro Staff and also runs Trophy Takers Fishing Charters. Jeremie did a great session on Trolling, and gave me some real insight into the value of using Dipsy Divers and Planer Boards, so look for those being used on the new boat this year. Speaking of the new boat, stay tuned for my post on that topic :). The other thing I enjoy doing is checking out the various outfitters, keeping an eye out for the next destination. It was great to visit with Eric Lund of Esnagami Lodge, the first fly in trip I’ve ever been on, and a real benchmark to strive to. I also had a visit with Mel from Hearst Air, who I’ve been flying with for the past two year, and will gain this summer. I had a great chat with the operator of North To Adventure about his outpost options. All in all, it was a great day, I picked up a few goodies, had a good time hanging out with the guys, and got pretty excited for the fishing season which is not that far off! I open the season on May 10th, with is only 3 months away!

Mystery Tackle Box January 2014

mystery_tackle_box_logoWell, I’m late again! I must be delayed with the endless days of shovelling this year. Can you believe how much snow and cold we’ve been getting in Southwestern Ontario? I just keep reminding myself that in a few months, I’ll be fishing on that snow after it’s melted, and that it’s a good sign for 2014 water levels. Anyways, have a look at my unboxing video for the January Mystery Tackle Box!

Mystery Tackle Box Unboxing, December 2013

I’m really falling behind, in that I’m doing my December Unboxing, a few days before I receive my January one! I really have to get caught up, but please enjoy the video below. Things to look forward to? Well, three more unboxing videos to come, my visit to the Toronto International Boat Show where I may order my new boat for 2014, and so much more. 2014 looks to be a very big year for me both on and off the water, and I’m ready for it.

Christmas Gear 2013

thIt’s been a while since I’ve posted anything, mostly because I haven’t been on the water in a long time! I was out in November, but I just had a terrible outing, nothing worth putting on the screen, so this is my first time to post anything meaningful. I’m in the midst of a job change, and my current employer gave me a wonderful send off, including a great new Bass Pro Shop 100MPH rain suit, and the staff chipped in for a generous amount of gift cards for Bass Pro. Now, I’ve only done one shopping trip, which you can see the results of in the video below, but I have more planned. My new addition for tackle / gear this summer is planned to be a line counter reel, and a new rod to go with it. I really enjoy trolling, and having a good idea of where your lure is at any time is an important piece of information when you are looking to replicate a presentation. Have a watch of the video, and look for a few more in the coming weeks!

Unboxing My Mystery Tackle Box October 2013

ImageI recently saw what I think is one of the coolest ideas I’ve seen in a long time. It is called Mystery Tackle Box, and I signed up at once. The idea as I understand it, it a way for lure manufactures to get new and exciting products into the hands of anglers, who may otherwise not have purchased and used the product. It reminds me a bit of how the original Ipod got you to listen to music you may have forgotten about by having it randomly play from your list. The cost is $15 per month, and that includes shipping (and I’m in Canada!), and you generally get more than that in product value. You’ll get an assortment of hard and soft baits, as well as hooks and special offers.

Still some great fishing planned, and I have a goal!

ImageFall is by far my favourite season of the year. I love the temperatures, the colors, and the fact that most bodies of water have very low traffic on them. The view of my surroundings as I’m on the water in Fall just add that extra level of enjoyment, and the backdrop for those fishing pictures can’t be beat!

My wife and I were recently on a hot air balloon ride, which we have been trying to get on for 3 years, with the weather cancelling us each time. We made it this year, and I got some great pictures of the region, including some nice time overhead one of the main rivers that I have fished, and forms an important part of our overall watershed. It was really impressive to see the scope of the waterways from this angle.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMy two main lakes, Conestoga and Belwood Lake, both close for the season in less than two weeks. I’ll be sure to get our a couple more times, but as the water levels hit their seasonal lows, it does get a bit risky out there, so caution is important. I do have two more weekend trips planned though. One will be a return to Pointe au Baril Station, where I caught a personal best 42inch pike earlier this year. My second, and last time on the water will be the last Saturday of November / first day of December, up in the Haliburton Highlands. That brings me to my goal. I want to have a picture to show, of me holding a fish (of any species), caught on December 1st 2013. Part of the reason is jus because most people have packed it in by then, but also because if I catch a fish in December, I can honestly say it’s only 4 months of the year where I have to wait until I’m on the water again. So in a few months, watch for that post!

Fishing is a Team Sport

ImageI recently went on my annual Father and Son fishing trip to Bayfield Lodge, in the Bayfield Inlet of Pointe Au Baril, in the Georgian Bay Region. We’ve been going to this same lodge for over 20 years, and enjoy the combination of friendship, scenery, and hopefully a few fish along the way. This photo shows my brother with the big fish of the weekend.

Fishing Trip-09-15-2013_181-

One of the aspects of the trip I really enjoy, is that while we want to catch fish, the emphasis is really on the fellowship and the fish are a bonus. On this particular trip, I did pretty well by historical standards. I caught a few bigger fish, caught some variety and generally had a relaxing time (while fighting a wicked head cold). This year was a great year for a couple of the guys though, who sometimes don’t catch as many fish.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe picture just above shows Brian catching a personal best in bass, and the photo to the left shows Ed with a personal best in Northern Pike. What was great about the Pike is that Ed had provided a “first fish of the day” prize, and one it. He then used it and got this guy. In case you are interested, it was a chrome Cotton Cordell shallow diver.

So this trip was really enjoyable to me. Great conversation, good weather, a wicked shore lunch, and the fish were spread around the group with a few highlights. I love to fish and catch big fish, but I equally love watching other folks get the same enjoyment out of the sport as I do, and this weekend was perfect for that.

Two Lures, In One Fish!

ImageI was out for a great morning of fishing today, again on Conestoga Lake. There were a few reasons why this morning was so special. First of all, the weather was spectacular, I love Fall weather, and it has begun. Secondly, we are still fishing this lake, whereas last year the water was too low to even launch at this time, so we are on bonus days! The final part was that we caught a few fish, and one of them had a story behind it. The fish was a 26inch Northern Pike, caught on an 11cm Rapala Scatter Rap Minnow. Thats an OK fish, but was was interesting is that I wasn’t the first angler to hook it. You’ll have to watch the video below to learn what I’m talking about. Enjoy the Fall Fishing!
